Ingredients
  

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium apples such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar adjust to sweetness of apples
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg optional
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice optional, to prevent browning

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions
 

  • Prepare the Apples: In a bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour or cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and lemon juice (if using). Toss gently.
  • Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon (if using). Cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
  • Assemble: Divide the apple mixture among several sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Top each portion with the crumble topping. Seal the foil packets securely.
  • Cook Over Campfire: Place the foil packets directly on the hot campfire coals (not in the flames). Cook for approximately 20-30 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is lightly browned.
